03/08/2007:// Cornish girls took the opportunity to take to the waves for the first time with the Roxy Shimmer tour which stopped off in Newquay.
The new surfers congregated with Roxy pros Candice O’Donnell, Holly Donnelly, Sarah Bentley and Sophie Helier at Fistral Beach and learned all of the basics of the sport.
The surf days in Newquay had a huge turn out and the small, clean waves made it perfect for learning to surf. After a surf lesson with the pros on the beach and in the water the girls had a healthy lunch at the Surfing Life Boarding House, a special surf yoga session and to end the day the girls kicked back in front of the inspirational Roxy film ‘Shimmer’ before heading home with their fab Roxy goodie bag.
Whilst dozens of girls took to the water for the very first time some local girls used the opportunity to brush up on their surfing skills, LuLu Jackson-Gali, 14, from Boscastle said, “I use a short board at home and this is the first time I have surfed a long board. It’s been really useful for progressing and today I have perfected my pop up. Being passed on tips from the pros has been so cool.”
Tamsyn Keens, 14, from Camleford said, “I’ve been surfing a few times before but today made it seem really easy. I stood up and rode the wave all the way in and it was really helpful to be taught from a female because they understand what its like being a girl learning to surf.”
The Roxy team already have their home base in Newquay and they are involved in the development of local female surfers through their sponsorship of local girls Sarah Bentley, Candice and Holly and the talent team is always on the look out for hot Cornwall based female talent for their squad.
Roxy also works with their head instructor and two times European Champion, Grishka Roberts to help continually encourage new female surfers into the water and develop their skills.
Sarah Bentley, from St Agnes, says, “It’s been really good fun. The conditions were perfect for learning in and the sun is shining! All the girls have been doing really well and have been having a load of fun.”
Newquay was the final stop on the special all girls Roxy Shimmer tour that has been touring around the South West of the UK.
Before arriving in Newquay the Shimmer tour called in a Bournemouth, Porthcawl in Wales and Portrush in Northern Ireland. The tour was organized by Roxy to encourage and inspire more girls to take up the sport.
Sophie Hellier says, “It’s been so cool working with girls all over the South West, nearly everyone of them has stood up and all of them are keen to get back in the water and give it another go. That was the whole aim of this tour so it’s been really worthwhile. I’m stoked.”
Michelle Noschese, Marketing Manager for Roxy UK says, “It was a great day down here and there was a really strong buzz about it all. All the girls that took part in the lessons over the two days really enjoyed themselves and I’m sure a lot of them will be back in the water as soon as they can. It was a real pleasure to inspire and introduce so many new girls to the sport and I really hope they keep it up.”
