07/09/2007:// Selection for the British surf team will be up for grabs at the Animal British Cup later this month.
Organisers will be hoping to take full advantage of September’s usual bigger swell opportunities and showcase three days of amateur and professional surf competitions, music and plenty of surfside action at Tolcarne Beach, in Newquay.
Sanctioned by the British Surfing Association, the Cornish competition will be one of a handful of events that will help choose the 2008 British squad.
The event will include the Men’s and Women’s Open, Juniors, Longboard and bodyboard, with a total prize purse of £4,000 to be given away. The event will also incorporate the “The Animal ASA Schools Competition. Organised by sixth form students from the Surf Academy at Treviglas, will see up to 15 schools from all over Cornwall and over 150 competitors showcase their talents and compete against each other.
There is plenty of surfside action to keep everyone occupied this year. The Animal Braun cruZer Bike Tour is back with a vengeance for 2007 with a new “skate park” style rig including spine ramp, ¼ pipe and rail combo’s.
Event manager Ciaran Henderson said: "We have made a major commitment to the grass roots of surfing here in Newquay with the opening of our new Animal Surf Academy at Tolcarne Beach."
The Animal Braun cruZer Team are on the last leg of their epic 50 date UK tour and will showcase the amazing riding talents of trials legend, Martyn Ashton and dirt jumper Grant “Chopper” Fielder.
The finalists of the Shark Bikini Babes contest will be back for the national final and will make sure that the temperature is kept nicely at boiling point over the weekend.
The entertainment doesn’t stop there as the Animal British Cup Weekend will also see two pumping nights of music as well as camping for those that want to take full advantage of the “Weekender”.
Contest Director Pauly Jeffery added: “With the amount of competitors we will have entering these events we will no doubt be using all three peaks at Tolcarne including the legendary Wedge for the Body boarders”.

Meanwhile, for the first time this year, the Animal Surf Academy in Cornwall will be holding an ASA Longboard Weekend on 22nd and 23rd September in Newquay and Polzeath.
Two-time European champ Elliot will be on-hand to help participants tweak their style – from nose-riding tips to cross stepping or walking the board.
The day will also include a chance to try out different styles of longboards to help find which one best suits riders.
An extra highlight will be a stand-up paddle surfing demo with Starboard UK, a new craze currently sweeping the UK coastline.
Everyone on the ASA Longboard Day will be able to find out more about one of the original forms of surfing dating back to the Polynesian forefathers who first took to the waves and were documented by Captain Cook in the Eighteenth Century.
There will also be an opportunity for surfers to try out the boards on the day.
