Catch a Shooting Star in Cornwall this November
by Howard Swanwick
09/09/2007:// There has never been a better time for Cornish film, in addition to showing over 150 new short films made by Cornwall’s talented filmmakers we are also premiering 5 Cornish features. These feature films, funded by Cornwall Film, include the Target Talent films 'Midnight Drives' directed by Mark Jenkin and 'Dressing Granite' directed by Bill Scott.
Also showing will be ‘The Art of Catching Lobsters’ directed by Jane Darke, a remarkable story of loss, grief and hope; told with powerful elegance, humour and openness. “I wanted to make a film about the playwright Nick Darke because he was a man from a different time, a passionate, talented, generous, wise, beautiful man and because I loved him. The Art of Catching Lobsters is about love and loss, it’s a celebration of life.” Jane Darke
The Cornwall Film Festival is now in its 6th year and it just keeps getting bigger and more dynamic every year with ever growing audience figures, film submissions, venues and events.
Set up in 2002 the Cornwall Film Festival is a high quality, vibrant and fun Festival which celebrates Cornwall’s cultural identity through the medium of film, providing an eclectic and diverse programme of film screenings, including regional film premieres and films which may not reach Cornwall through main stream cinema release.
It also acts as a forum for local filmmakers to market their films at prearranged meetings and social events giving them the opportunity to discuss future projects and forge new collaborations.
The quality of films being selected for competition at the Festival creates a benchmark to keep film making standards high, and every year the quality keeps getting better.
This year the Festival opens for the very first time outside of Falmouth with a Gala Premiere screening at the Plaza Cinema, Truro, on the 8th November (feature to be announced), with the rest of the Festival taking place in Falmouth at the Princess Pavilion, National Maritime Museum and the University College Falmouth Tremough Campus.
The Festival is pleased to welcome John Wojowski, the Festival Director of Kinofilm, Manchester International Film Festival, to take over this year from Laura Hardman who is currently on maternity leave. John brings with him 15 years of experience delivering film festivals and curating touring film programmes in Europe, USA, South America, Australia and Malaysia.
John says, "I'm extremely excited at the opportunity to produce this year's event in Falmouth, and I'm already rising to the challenge. There's a wealth of film making talent in Cornwall and we've had over 150 short films submitted from Cornish Filmmakers. There have been five new features produced here this year too, including The Midnight Drives and Dressing Granite - which will be premiering in the Festival. There's a substantial amount of young and established filmmakers, production companies and other media organisations in the region that have over the last few years been quietly hidden away in Cornwall. It's my job to get their names out there and I'll be doing just that, and I'll be encouraging the board next year to open up this Festival to the rest of the UK. It's now ready, and it really deserves the exposure!"
Alongside screenings there is a programme of skills development which complements and supports the work of other organisations in Cornwall whose involvement helps to raise the profile of the Cornwall Film Festival nationally and to create a sense of excitement about Cornish film culture.
With expert guests, discussions, one-to-ones with visiting professionals, technical workshops, masterclasses and of course, the parties, this vibrant Festival focusing on Cornish filmmaking offers local filmmakers and film lovers a chance to not only see a vast range of films but to increase their knowledge and skills.
