News O'Neill Championships returns to Newquay

[Sam Lamiroy]

Back at Fistral Beach aftter five years by Howard Swanwick

14/09/2007:// It has just been announced that the O’Neill British Open Championships will be back on Fistral Beach in Newquay this Autumn after a five year absence. On the 13th and 14th of October the beach will be a hive of activity as Britain’s very best surfers battle it out for the prestigious British champion titles in the Open, Womens, Seniors, Masters, and Veterans divisions. Over £3,000 worth of prize money is also up for grabs thanks to the generous sponsor, O’Neill.

Last year in North Devon over 150 competitors entered and organisers and sponsors are expecting the event to be even bigger this year. Crowds of over 5,000 spectators are expected to gather on the beach to witness this showcase of British surfing. Sam Lamiroy claimed the title in 2003 and 2006 so this year all riders will be stepping up their game to attempt to beat him. Contestants will also be pulling off their best maneuvers to impress judges for the selection of the British Surfing Team for the World Masters Championships in Peru and World Surfing Games in Portugal next year.

Keeley Wilkie-Smith, Marketing Manager of O’Neill UK says, "The O’Neill British Open Surf Championships always has such a great atmosphere. We think the change in location will be an exciting move this year and we hope to have even bigger crowds getting involved and cheering all the surfers on. The National Surfing Centre on Fistral beach is an ideal location for that.”

Karen Walton, Open Director of the BSA says, “It’s always brilliant to see so many competitors and local people get involved in the contest. We hope that we will have the most entrants ever at this year’s event on Fistral Beach. The O’Neill British Open Surf Championships is without a doubt one of the most prestigious events on the annual calendar and we are looking forward to our county’s top talent performing at their best.”

Anyone who wants to compete in The O'Neill British Open Surfing Championships 2007 should log-onto www.britsurf.co.uk to fill in the entry forms or call 01637 876474.
