Swansea dominates at Jesus Surf Classic

16/09/2007:// Swansea surfers dominated the women's section of the Jesus Surf Classic in North Devon.
Gwen Spurlock took top spot in the women's final ahead of fellow Welsh surfer Beth Mason.
Devon's Karma Worthing took third place with Izzy Burke in fourth.
In the junior women's final, Mason surfed powerfully in the 2ft waves at Croyde Bay to take victory with Spurlock back in second place.
Local knowledged helped Croyde's Kathleen Spears secure third spot with Morthoe's Katie Oakley back in fourth.
The ‘Jesus’ due to its increasing popularity was split this year between the traditional event at Croyde, and the Jesus Longboard Classic to be held at Polzeath over the weekend of October 6th and 7th.
With over 130 contestants registered for the Croyde event, and the very gloomy swell forecast, organisers decided to postpone the Masters, Men’s Open and Juniors to the weekend of September 22nd and 23rd.
The swell did hold though for the youth event to be completed. Three Newquay surfers and one from North Devon battled for the honours in the U14 final.
In a tight encounter, Croyde's Beau Bromham took first place ahead Cornish trio Leon Mansfield, Tom Good and Jack Hughes.
In the cadets, Tom Good from Newquay, finished fourth, just beaten by Braunton’s Alex Baker, but the division was won by Woolacombe’s Stuart Campbell, ahead of Luis Eyres, currently living and training in Portugal.
Organisers Christian Surfers UK were pretty stoked for the event to have been held in some great conditions for the younger age groups.
Apart from the surfing, the activities around the event marquee included the plasma screen showing of surf movies, food, and exhibition of the work of both Christian Surfers and Surf Relief UK.
The event's skate contest drew good crowds around the park, built especially for the festival with the overall winners being Jamie Mather (Over 13), and in the Under 13’s Jake Rush and Dominic Heyland took the honours. Tom Walker won the over 18’s.
