Secondary Schools meet for largest competiton so far
by Howard Swanwick
15/10/2007:// Secondary Schools from across the North Devon region met up at Putsborough Sands on Friday for the third, and by far the largest TRISURF Inter-Schools Surf Championships.
Nearly 100 pupils from 10 different schools and colleges competed on the day in two events, and came from as far away as Crediton and Tiverton. Contest organiser, Chris Farris commented “this is the third year that TRISURF have organised and funded the North Devon Inter-schools Surf Championships, and it just gets bigger and better every year. We wanted the event to be as inclusive as possible for School Surf Clubs, so we held two separate events. One was a standard, high level surf competition, and the other was an innovative ‘tag team’ event. The tag team competition meant that clubs could enter less able surfers, and use tactics to achieve the best results”.
The day was blessed with good weather and a decent swell, which continued to build towards the finals. Braunton School were on excellent form and took both the tag team and School team prizes. Ilfracombe College came 2nd in the tag event, followed by Bideford in 3rd. Stuart Campbell representing North Devon College won the standard competition individual contest, closely followed by Braunton’s Beau Bromham in 2nd place and Max Weston in 3rd.
Chris added “surfing is a very important sport and pastime for many youngsters in North Devon, much more than people imagine. TRISURF have supported School Surf Clubs in a variety of ways, and it is great to see the clubs so active. This competition brings them all together and has become a focal point for club activities”.
Prizes that the teams won for their School Surf Clubs included: free entry to and guided tour of the Eden Project with Pat Hudson who is working on the eco surfboard project, a brand new Circle One surfboard, a high ropes session at the new Ultimate High ropes course near Bideford and a Redwood Surf Shop goodie bag.
Individual prizes included: Circle One wetsuit and hoodie, a £50 voucher from Saltrock and Redwood Surf Shop goodie bag. TRISURF and the competitors would like to thank these sponsors for supporting this competition.
A big thank you to sports teacher Zoe Ashton from Pilton Community College and Rob Whitney and Pete Keegan from Ilfracombe College for organising the running of the day and sourcing prizes.
Many thanks to the judging panel, which included local surf hero’s Scott Rannochan and Andrew Cotton. Also many thanks to Rob Tucker from Putsborough Sands for use of this fantastic beach, and to the RNLI who provided top class safety cover on the day. There was even a fly-past by a Hercules aeroplane thanks to RAF Chivenor.
