Skinner clinches European Longboard Champs
by Howard Swanwick
23/10/2007:// It was not all doom and gloom for English sports fans at the weekend. While England were losing the rugby World Cup Final in Paris, Newquay surfer Ben Skinner was triumphing in Portugal, clinching the European Longboard Championship.
He achieved success almost a year to the day since winning a silver medal in the World Surfing Games in California and his latest success reinforced his billing, at 22 years old, as potentially Britain’s best-ever surfer.
The Portuguese final in Estoril was a battle between the UK and France, with Ben winning this stage and the European title with a near-perfect performance.
He crushed his rivals with the best four waves – 10.00, 8.75, 8.67 and 8.35 – and the best scores – 18.67, 16.75 and 16.40.
“To win the first European Longboard title is a dream come true,” declared Ben. “It was an incredible experience – a terrific festival – and I very much hope to come back next year.”
A total of 48 athletes from Portugal, the UK, France, Germany and Romania competed in the final round of the European tour.
