News Newquay retain inter club title

[Newquay A victorious]

Tight final in Cornwall sees title stay at home by George Mojo

29/10/2007:// There was unebelievably-tight competition at the British Inter-Club surfing championships in Cornwall.

Perfect 4-6 foot surf rolled onto Newquay’s Fistral Beach and teams from all over the country made their way to Newquay to compete in the biggest club event in the British surfing calendar.

Eight teams took to the water in the heats and enthusiastic surfers competed overall.

An intense competition ensued however there was just no stopping defending champions, the Newquay A team.

With a line-up consisting of Russell Winter, Gareth Llewellyn, Ben Baird, Jamie Owen, Tom Butler and Sean Harris they fired through every round and in a staggering range of performances, only lost one point during the competition to take the title.

There was tight competition throughout all the heats however and the vigilant judges were kept on their toes throughout, with ferocious competing for second places.

So many heats had close ties that waves scores had to be counted back to the third wave to decide the first and second places.

In the finals, Newquay A’s overwhelming performance left them as the undoubted winners followed in second place by the Newquay B Team, Langland A team in third place and Porthleven in fourth.

Teams from Woolacombe and Wessex also entered and took respectable positions.

Karen Walton, National Director of the BSA, says, “The Interclub 2007 event was brilliant fun as it always is, and with great waves everyone was able to perform to their very best. There was some truly excellent surfing and the competition was beyond intense."

"It was so tight throughout and we congratulate Newquay A Team on taking the title again."

"The high level of participation plus everyone’s enthusiasm for the event just goes to show how much is going on in the British club scene and it’s great to see everyone getting together like this. We’ve recently announced major funding for a new Sport England Regional Surf Development Coach and as a result, we expect that next year’s event will be even bigger and more hotly contested,” she added.
