Geordie holds slim lead in final event by George Mojo

05/11/2007:// Geordie Sam Lamiroy goes into the final event of the UK Pro Surf Tour event in Cornwall with less than a 100-point lead at the top of the rankings.

Lamiroy, a former British champion, has it all to do to wrap up the title with in-form Llewellyn Whittaker looking for a third win in four events.

The Gul Newquay Open is the season finale and this year's Fistral Beach showdown promises to be an epic encounter between two surfers both eager to put their name on the winners trophy.

Lamiroy is a seasoned pro who's polished competition prowess has earned big rewards in competitions all over the world.

Whittaker, meanwhile, is a power-house surfer who's trademark backhand lip bashes has helped him leave many of Europe's top stars in his wake.

Lamiroy, who lives in Perranporth heads the leaderboard with 4,965 points. Whittaker, a winner last week in both the Tyneside and Portrush legs of the tour is on 4,871.

Johnny Fryer, from the Isle Of Wight is also in contention back in third place with Constantine Bay's Toby Atkins in fourth.

Ireland's Fergal Smith, Newquay's Oli Adams and South African Reubin Pearce should feature in the final stages and may hold the key to the final placings.

2007 is Gul’s fortieth anniversary, so this years Gul Newquay Open is set to be bigger and better than ever in celebration of the company’s heritage and history in the industry.

The 2007 tour has moved up a gear from previous years, with new sponsors stepping up and putting on excellent events all around Britain throughout the year. G-Shock, Relentless and Skinner’s Brewery have supported the whole tour with a presence at every contest. The top names in UK surfing have been following the tour religiously this year, looking to win this prestigious tour champion title.

Dave Reed, director of the UK Pro Tour, said: “This is the longest running tour event, now in its tenth year, winners have included the best surfers in the country and some top international stars. This year's event will be no exception and will finally crown the UK Pro Surf Tour Champion 2007
