News Otton cools Winter charge in Hawaii

Briton misses out on fourth round spot by George Mojo

16/11/2007:// Briton Russel Winter missed out on a fourth round place at the Reef Hawaiian Pro by just three points.

Winter, from Newquay, was in 80th place in the WQS rankings going into the opening Triple Crown Series event at Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore.

Despite scoring 11.64 points from his two waves, the British number one had to settle for third spot behind Australian Kai Otton and Brazil's Danilo Costa.

It was a disappointing result for the England international who in the earlier round defeated Australian Adam Robertson, Brazilian Robson Santos and Mark Mathews.

The 32-year-old arrived at the contest site after making the finals of the Newquay Open at the weekend where he made the final and won a special Expression Session.

Winter, the only UK surfer in the event, has surfed in Hawaii for the last decade and made his mark at all the top tournaments staged in the islands.

The Hawaiian Pro is the first jewel of the 25th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

Carrying the highest WQS rating of 6-stars it's critical in determining the line-up for the elite World Championship Tour next year.
