Three year deal for two of Britain's biggest names
by Howard Swanwick
21/11/2007:// Two of tow surfing’s biggest names in the UK have secured a three-year sponsorship deal
Newquay-based Ben Skinner, current professional European longboard champion, and Ben Granata, co-founder of the British Tow Surf Association, have taken delivery of a handsome new top-of-the-range Yamaha VX Highoutput 1100 cc jetski.
It has been supplied by Truro-based Skinners Brewery – owned by Ben’s parents Steve and Sarah – for the two Bens to catch the really big waves in the UK and Europe.
Tow surfing is a hybrid sport emerging from traditional surfing, but with the additional use of a driver on a jetski or personal watercraft to slingshot the surfer into peaking waves, often too big to be caught by paddling power alone.
“It gives new meaning to ‘spectacular’ and is absolutely terrific to watch,” said Steve Skinner. “It’s becoming well established in the likes of Hawaii but is still in its infancy over here, but when the surfers get it right on the big wave it makes a truly awesome spectacle.
“It is also a potentially dangerous sport, of course, and safety is paramount. The jetski is a much safer way of catching the really big wave than relying on paddles.”
He added: “We have always supported our son in his passion for surfing and we are very pleased now to be able to help both Bens in this more specialised area. The jetski will also be a good ambassador for Cornwall with the Cornish flag down its side!”
