News Frostbite sessions for Cornwall

Surf coach to attract Britain's top young surfers by George Mojo

27/11/2007:// A top Cornish surf coach is behind a unique four series winter surf event in the county which is set to attract Britain's top young surfers.

The South to South Frostbite Sessions are the brainchild of Hayle's Tyson Greenaway, who is also coach to the British junior surfing squad.

The first event is scheduled to take place at Gwithian in mid December followed five weeks later with the second leg at Praa Sands.

The venue for the third leg on February 16th is yet to be decided, but organisers have earmarked March 15th for the Grand Finale at what will be a mobile contest.

Greenaway says the innovative contest format will get the best out of local surfers: "Most comps for the juniors are held in the summer months, but the waves are often small, or even flat.

"We want to give Britain’s new generation of surfers the chance to surf in decent waves at the best locations,". he added.
The event consists of three, one-day contests, for surfers in categories 16 and under, and 18 and under, and based on the best two results, the top four surfers from the series will compete in a mobile Grand Final.

They will be taken to the best waves available on the day, be it Porthleven, Bude or St Agnes, to battle for the chance to win a lucrative sponsorship deal with event sponsors, South to South.

The package will include photo shoots, and a vital stepping stone onto a future surfing career.

Commercial Director Ant James sees the series as a great opportunity for junior surfers: "We want our first major event to reflect our values. Our roots may be from the warmer climes of Brazil, but good waves in great spots is what it’s all about, no matter where you come from. This is an event that we want to build on, and give young surfers what they deserve."

The first event at Gwithian is earmarked for Saturday, December 15th, followed by Praa Sands, on Saturday, January 19th.
