14/12/2007:// A building westerly swell has led organisers to announce the Gold Rush Big Wave Challenge will take place in Cornwall this weekend.
The British Surfing Association is expecting double overhead surf and offshore winds at Fistral Beach, in Newquay, for what promises to be a dramatic display of surfing.
Last year’s inaugural event was a huge success. with spectators were treated to some of the best contest surfing the UK had ever seen as clean 8ft waves (created by the tail end of Hurricane Gordon) pounded the Cornish coastline.
In a dramatic final, Jersey’s Scott Eastwood took the £1,000 winner’s cheque with a last minute barrel that earned him a perfect 10 from the judges and serious respect from his peers. This year the surf is set to be even bigger.
The Goldrush is an annual event that is called on at 3 days notice when conditions are set to be classic, regardless of the usual time and date constraints. Confirmed attendees in the invite only field of top British surfers include Oli Adams, Johnny Fryer, Ben Skinner, Dan ‘Mole’ Joel, Tom Butler and Ben Baird.
Event co-ordinatior Dave Foster says, “We’ve got the ideal situation where a very intense low pressure system way out in the middle of the North Atlantic is generating huge surf which, thanks to a strong area of high pressure over NW Europe, will be groomed by offshore winds as it hits our shores on Sunday. With many of the country’s top surfers taking part, we’re really excited about what’s in store – it’s going to be awesome.”
In addition to lifeguard cover from the RNLI, Ben Granata of water safety training and event safety providers K38 UK will be on hand to provide PWC (jet-ski) assistance, should it be needed.
The contest will be staged this Sunday, December 16th
