Meet Sean Mattison
Around that time you also started coaching. Tell us about Surfcoach USA.
When I was a professional surfer, Joey Buran (1984 Pipeline Master Champion) was my personal coach. We had built a good friendship during my career. After leaving professional surfing and going into retail, I had the opportunity in 1998 to hire Joey as a employee at Surf Ride. We then decided to start farming talent here in Southern California as a way to market the stores. This was when I started coaching with kids.
Many of the kids we trained went on to be World Gold medallists and professional surfers. The joy of coaching really grew and found it to be a way to put water back into the well that I have drawn from for a long time. After leaving Surf Ride in 2007, I started my professional coaching business Surfcoach USA. My main focus has been on amateur and professional surfers to take them to the next level. I have been able to use my knowledge of equipment, technique and competing to better their skills as surfers.
Basically...“If you surf better...you have more fun.” My wife and I have been also branching out to the “learn to surf” market, giving lessons together. Our future plans are to take vacationing surfers from Europe and Japan, offer personal coaching and tours of spots here in Southern California. I have really noticed a lot of interest from the adult surfer that wants to work on surfing better.
