News Cornwall to host BLU finale

The dates have been set for the end-of-season British Longboard Union Series Final in Cornwall by George Mojo

16/08/2008 :// The first contests of the BLU summer series have been dominated by Cornish longboarders.

World Games silver medallist Ben Skinner, from Newquay, top spot in the Open division in both Perranporth and Watergate Bay and heads the ratings.

Newquay's Adam Griffiths and Sam Bleakley have both made one final apiece to keep their selection hopes alive.

Cornwall's current English and British longboard champion Candice O'Donnell is among the leaders in the women's division having won the opening event of the season and placing third in the second competition.

A solid result in the next contest at Gwithian next month put her in strong contention for a hat-trick of major titles in 2008

Organisers are looking at running a " Round Robin " format in the Oxbow Series Final at the end of September so competitors can surf more than once.

On Friday, September 26th, The final pre-qualifier will be open to seniors, masters, juniors and ladies, who will compete in their respective divisions.

The top ten seniors from the Open division, and top five from the Masters’, Juniors’ and Ladies divisions, will then qualify for Saturday’s final.

Final's Day, on September 27th, will consist of sixteen competitors in the Open division and eight each in the Masters’, Juniors’ and Ladies divisions.

Finalists will be comprised of a number of qualifiers from Friday 26th September and other qualifiers from previous BLU rounds.

The BLU series tests surfer’s capabilities across different beaches, at four different times of year, to find the Oxbow BLU Champion.

Through this challenge, the BLU series has been a focal point in national longboard surfing since 1996.

This year will be no exception with the event’s 12th Anniversary and an increase in prize money, this year’s title is set to be the most prestigious yet.
