Clint Loake fought off a strong challenge from Normandy bodyboarder Olivier Brosson to win the Drop-Knee Open 2008 in Jersey

30/06/2008:// The specialist type of board riding bodyboard event was organised by the island's bodyboarders, and took place in 3-4ft surf at Kempt Tower, at St Ouen's Bay, which had choppy wave faces due to the light onshore breeze.
The first round saw some good drop-kneeing, with particular strong performances coming from Andy De La Mare, who performed a powerful carving top-turn on a nice left hand wave, and Brosson, an annual visitor from Normandy for this event, who specialises in this method of bodyboard riding.
The most unluckiest competitor was Steve Pinzari, who just missed out on a place in the semi-finals after tying his heat and then going out by the slightest of margins by what is known as a countback on the judges score cards.
The first semi-final was contested by Colin Laurent, Brosson and Crowther. It was Crowther who caused a shock result after finding a long peeling right-hander on his backhand, followed by a threesixty and re-entry on a lefthander to eliminate one of the pre contest favourites Laurent, who missed out on finding the better shaped waves. The heat was won by the smooth riding of Brosson, who looked comfortable in the conditions.
Semi-final two, took place a little bit further down the beach, as the competitors Loake, De La Mare and junior David Speller paddled south towards a good sandbank offering slightly bigger waves. In a close heat it was Speller and Loake, who was surfing particularly strong, who advanced through to the final.
The final saw fewer good waves come through, although those which did come in were starting to become more powerful, as they started breaking on a shallower sandbank. The final developed into a close battle between Loake and Brosson, who both ride drop-knee with very different styles. Brosson surfing with a slick finely tuned style, performing carving turns on both his back-hand and fore-hand, whilst Loake throws in fast snappy turns and threesixties. A big re-entry on a right-hander eventually seperated the two, giving Loake the win.
Speller found a few nice lefthanders to take third spot ahead of Crowther in 4th, who failed to find the longer peeling waves.
