A top British surfer is the brainchild behind what's being billed as the biggest Invitational Skins contest Cornwall has ever staged
by George Mojo
12/08/2008:// Newquay's Spencer Hargraves, a former British and English champion, is organising the event which will also be used as a scouting opportunity for new members to the Quiksilver and Roxy UK surf teams.
Hargraves, who is also one of the squad's coaches, has invited 32 top professional surfers to the two-day event at Newquay's Fistral Beach on August 23-25.
It will be run on a similar format man-on-man format used by the Association of Surf Professionals for the final rounds of the recent Boardmasters contest, although the winner of each heat will stay in the water until they are beaten.
The surfers will go head to head until only one competitor is left standing.
Newquay's Alan Stokes and Nathan Phillips are already signed up for the challenge at which the victor will also stand to win a classic Gibson electric guitar.
Hargraves, the contest director, says it promises to be an exciting competition: "It will be the first time Newquay has seen a Skins event like this for a long time. It'll be great for the surfers and spectators alike and its nice to be able to run this kind of event so the surfers don’t have a lot of pressure and can really go for it.
It will bring surfing home to Fistral on the biggest weekend of the year. Surfers can really rack up the money, so they'll be stoked to have an opportunity to have fun and compete in this type of contest, which will really keep the spectators on the beach interested too,” he added.
UK Roxy surfers including Cornwall's Holly Donnelly, British longboard champion Holly Donnelly, Sophie Hellyer, and Amy May Garvey will be on the beach throughout the weekend, providing demos and scouting for new female surfers for the squad.
The Guitar tour bus will be parked up on Fistral Beach exclusively for event and will be the hub for impromptu gigs over the weekend.
The bus is a rock n roll experience in its own right and provides a taste of the heritage and prestige that the guitars represents around the world.
Hargraves will also be joining fellow Newquay surfer Grishka Roberts for a stand-up paddle-board demonstration during the weekend.
