Britain's Russell Winter bounced back from a disappointing first round exit at the recent Rip Curl Boardmasters in Newquay to make it through to round two of the Sooruz Lacanau Pro in France
by George Mojo
13/08/2008:// Winter, from Cornwall, relished the tricky windblown waves and vicious currents at the famed beachbreak to make it through to the last 98 of the 6-star World Qualifying Series with heat winter Brazilian Thiago Carmarao.
Winter's nine point two-wave tally put him runner-up to his South American opponent but was good enough to eliminate American Justin McBride and Ireland's Fergal Smith.
The former British and English champion is rewarded with a match-up against Hawaiian Joel Centero and Australians Ben Dunn and Ryan Campbell.
"I broke my wirst three months ago and I am slowly getting back to normal. It is getting better week after week so it is really a relief to feel good again. I got a couple of good waves but it is always quite difficult in Lacanau and in this kind of conditions there is a lot of luck involved," said Winter.
Fellow Briton Johnny Fryer faired less well in the testing surf condtions.scoring just 2.67 points in his heat. Brazil's Gilmar Silva and Australian Dallas Peterson both progressed by scoring more than six points.
Almost all favorites managed to make their way through to Round 2. Australian Sam Page, 22, put on a good performance winning with an average 12.30 point heat tally and was one of a few surfers to find a barrel.
"It was very tough out there and the current made it even harder", Page said. "I cut my head pretty bad on my first wave but it was quite fun still. It was a real washing machine down there but I managed to score enough to get through to next heat."
The European contingent suffered heavy losses on the opening day but young guns Marcos San Segundo and ASP World Junior No. 3 Charles Martin were among those qualifying.
Recent Rip Curl Boardmasters winner Wiggolly Dantas will also feature in round two. He won his opening encounter and goes against Hawaiian Mason Ho, Aussie Corey Ziems and South African Travis Logie.
