Newquay surfer Russell Winter narrowly missed out on a place in the last 80 of the Sooruz Lacanau Pro, in France
by George Mojo
13/08/2008:// The former British and English champion was outpointed in his second round heat in solid four to six foot waves by Hawaiian Joel Centeio and Australian Ben Dunn.
The challenging conditions made it hard for Winter and the rest of the surfers in the second round to post big scores.
Winter, who bowed out of the recent Rip Curl Boardmasters at Fistral Beach in round one, is returning to top class competition after breaking a wrist while free-surfing at Porthleven earlier this year.
The 33-year-old showed good form in his opening heat with a nine point two-wave tally placing him runner-up.
But he was unable to mirror that performance against Centeio, who made the quarter-finals of the Lacanau event last season.
"I had very good surfers in my heat so I am pretty stoked to get through to it", said Centeio. "I had a lot of fun out there actually because I like challenging conditions and some pretty solid waves came through during my heat." Centeio will have another tough battle in Round 3 as he will face reigning ASP European Junior champion Romain Cloitre and Brazilian powerhouse and ASP Top 45 campaigner Leonardo Neves.
The only other Briton in the event - Johnny Fryer - saw his chances fade in round one. He scored just 2.67 points in his heat. Brazil's Gilmar Silva and Australian Dallas Peterson both progressing by scoring more than six points.
The winner of the Newquay Boardmaster's Brazilian Wiggoly Dantas came close to elimination in his second round outing but managed to catch a last-minute ride and keep his hopes alive of a second consecutive World Qualifying Series event victory.
"It was pretty hard out there and I just had one good wave", said Dantas. "I was relaxed enough still and I waited patiently for that last wave to come and it was enough so I am stoked."
The 18-year-old, who is now seen as the number one giant killer after his impressive run in Newquay will be seen as posing a threat to all the top seeded surfers. Dantas is up against Amercian Gabe Kling and Frenchman Tim Boal.
Two-times world champion Sunny Garcia, who cancelled his entry into the Fistral Beach event earlier this month, enters the French competition at the round three stage as one of the seeded competitors.
