Briton Russell Winter's run in the Buondi Billabong Pro in Portugal came to an abrupt end when the Cornishman finished last in his second round heat
by George Mojo
28/08/2008:// The Newquay surfer, who had been one of the top four heat scorers in the opening round, could not repeat his performance in the solid 4 to 5ft waves at Ericeira.
His two-wave score of 7.66 points was a long way off the pace of heat winner Adilton Mariano, of Brazil and Morocco's Abdel El Harim.
Winter was full of confidence going into the encounter but could only catch three waves to his opponents seven.
After a disappointing 1.33 point opening ride, the former British and English champion raised his game with a 6.33. His downfall came when he was unable to get another high-scoring ride.
South African Damien Fahrenfort was third, a point ahead of Winter at the final hooter.
The untimely exit of Winter ends British hopes of success at the 6star World Qualifying Series event.
South African Gavin Roberts, who featured strongly at the Rip Curl Boardmasters in Newquay, secured the ride of the round posting an excellent 9.50 point wave on his forehand putting together five solid re-entries up to the inside section.
"I am pretty happy with that heat, I just waited for the wave to come and found the high score," Roberts said. "It is the first time ever I am competing on this wave and I am stoked to finally get a chance to surf it in solid conditions. It is a lot bigger than many of the waves we had on tour this year and I usually surf better in these conditions."
Roberts, who started off his European campaign with an equal 17th at Fistral Beach in Newquay, has been showing consistency since then and seems in good form looking forward to paddling back out.
However, Roberts could be surfing his last event this week.
"I started well in England and I was just looking to enjoy my time competing which is happening," Roberts said. "It is probably the last event I will be surfing in as I have been thinking of retirement and settling down. I have been around for sometime and I just feel like getting a job now and pulling back. The funny thing is that since I have nothing to lose, I am surfing better and better."
Roberts will meet Hawaiian powerhouse and former ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (HAW) when competition recommences
