The countdown to the world's preeminent surfing series has begun and the acclaimed waves of Oahu's North Shore are coming to life on cue by Jodi Wilmott

03/10/2008:// The 26th annual Vans Triple Crown of Surfing will commence its six-week run on November 12, 2008, through December 20, and will offer the largest prize purse in the Series' history: $815,000.

In a battle for world titles*, six prestigious event titles, and the coveted Series crown, over 260 of the world's top-ranked men and women surfers from the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Dream Tour will return to Hawaii.

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series takes place at three of the world's most venerated surf spots: Haleiwa, Sunest Beach, and the Banzai Pipeline. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is the final stop on the 2008 ASP tour.

Events comprising this year's Series are:

The Reef Hawaiian Pro - Haleiwa - Nov. 12-23 - men's & women's 6-star WQS
The O'Neill World Cup of Surfing - Sunset Beach - Nov. 24-Dec.6 - men's 6-star WQS
The Roxy Pro - Sunset Beach - Nov. 24-Dec.6 - women's WCT
The Billabong Pipeline Masters - Pipeline - Dec. 8-20 - final men's WCT event of 2008
The Billabong Pro Maui - Honolua Bay, Maui - Dec. 8-20 - final women's WCT of 2008

Each event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing has a designated 12-13 day window within which to run to completion. Competition is held on the 4 or 5 biggest and best days of surf on offer during each contest window.

*At the time of writing, Florida's Kelly Slater was on the verge of claiming his 9th world title. The women's world title will not likely be decided until the final event of the Vans Triple Crown. World Qualifying Series titles for both men and women will also be decided during the Triple Crown.
