The British champion had won his previous heat on his way to the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Portugal could have won the title but their last surfer in the contest David Raimundo decided not to claim his second wave opting for a smaller ride later on his his heat.
Costa Rica finished in the bronze medal position while South Africa were fourth.
